Rush Post #2

So in the few small segments that we watched before watching the entirety of Nanook of the North, I focused on what looked like Polar bear pelts and made my gram to track through the film polar bears/polar bear pelts. The first instance that polar bear pelts appear is as Nanook’s trousers, which no one else in the tribe seems to wear. It is as if the pure white pelts were saved to note people in power among the native peoples. This also seems to come out of the fact that the rest of the pelts get sold to the traders at the ‘white’ trading post down the river. Those pelts perhaps are very rare and worth a lot more to the traders than the seal parts. Of course, the polar bears didn’t show up again until later in the film when the family group set up camp and had gone hunting. Nanook made two little polar bears out of snow for one of his sons to practice hunting using a bow and arrow. It seems interesting that they chose to sculpt that rather than say a fox or a seal. It seems to be a symbol of power if one is able to take down a bear of that size on their own. Nanook has claimed to have taken two down on his own, by hand. My particular gram didn't appear again in the film. I am not sure if I picked the right thing to track given the lack of visual information. It does seem though that polar bears do mean something of a place of power. I just wish that it would have been clearer.

Rush Post #1

1. This was the only school that I applied for because of the reputation that the school has and I absolutely love this area of Washington. Also my fierce love for theater in Seattle. I am in the performance production department for costume and scenic design. Currently thinking about grad school and trying to work some in film to see if that is an industry that I could work in.

2. I don't have a ton of stuff going on outside of Cornish just because of the amount of work that the performance production department demands. I have a significant other who is also in school at Green River and plays football. We try to spend time together when we can which is difficult considering our very different schedules. Creatively, I do some writing of fantasy/sci-fi fiction and I do special effects make-up. Or more attempt to. I have only done some blood effects for a few really short pieces. I help out some with a upstarting tiny film company that so far has focused on highlighting B-Boys in the Bellevue/Seattle area as well. There is a zombie series in the works that will be hopefully fairly large scale. ish.

3. My absolute favorite genre in film is the space/future/apocalyptic westerns like Firefly/Serenity and Mad Max (Also the video game, Borderlands). Also time-travel adventures like Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Film is something that I want to try to break in to, specifically period pieces or maybe something with the Disney corporation.

4. I would like to be exposed to more documentaries, specifically ones that I would not have picked out for myself to watch. I also would like the opportunity to talk about what we watch in order to bring out some sort of meaning/significance for myself. There is one piece in particular that is on the list that I would love to talk about. I watched Banksy's Exit Through The Gift Shop on my own and still have no idea what I watched or the message behind it all. There might not be any to it, but I would like the chance to discuss 'Mr. BrainWash' and his possible manipulation of other more talented street artists.
